Short Route
This trail is very varied both in landscape and in terrain. Starting from the westernmost point of continental Europe, Cabo da Roca, it reaches the coast mainly on a dirt road. It climbs as a single path on the cliffs until the dinosaur footprints of Praia Grande, returns through a pine forest and then the villages of Almoçageme and Ulgueira, back to Cabo da Roca. Expect bamboo, vineyards, pine forests, sand, cliffs, great views and quaint villages. Right before Adraga, the Buraco do Fojo, a natural crater straight down to the sea through the cliffs is worth seeing. Though not a technical trail, good foot gear is suggested for the climbs.
ATTENTION: The beginning / end of this route was recently altered. Though it now has better views and less traffic, the initial dip down and up is technical and therefore more demanding. As an option, you can stay on the road (the red line option on the PDF).
The yellow and red painted markings of this route were reinforced in the summer of 2020.
The first half of this trail, until Praia Grande, coincides with the long distance footpath GR11.
This route is created and maintained by the City of Sintra.
This family-owned cozy and trendy restaurant on the south end of the beach is open all year around. Terrace is open in the summer months, and fireplace going during the wintrer. Closes on Tuesdays. Tel. 219 282 092
In the center of the village of Almoçageme, Sisudo is open for lunch and dinner, with typical Portuguese Mediterranean cuisine, especially known for its seasonal menu items and starters. Closed for Sunday dinner. Tel 219 291 507
