Trail Description

The Village Route of PR9 passes through true Saloia countryside and its villages. It begins by the church of the village of São João das Lampas (originating from the 1400’s), wonders by windmills and through countryside and over the recently reconstructed Roman road and bridge to the village of Catribana. It continues through countryside paths to Cortezia, then circles the village of Assafora and returns to São João das Lampas. The terrain is not difficult, countryside is either dirt roads of single lanes, and the village parts are mainly asphalt roads. Cafés, restaurants and some shops are available in Assafora and São João das Lampas. The yellow and red painted markings of this route were reinforced in the summer of 2020.

This route is created and maintained by the City of Sintra.

Our suggestions
  • Take a detour after Catribana village to Samarra Beach, about a half a kilometre outside of the village – the road is signposted
  • Try the local saloia bread from the bakery in Assafora, available in the local establishments
